Pool Deck Restoration: Recolouring Imprinted Concrete Pool Surrounds

A faded, stained imprinted pool deck can be restored in place: cleaned, repaired around the coping and recoloured in two coats of synthetic resin paint. Because the pool surround is barefoot ground, we treat grip, edges and pool water as part of the decision, and we only state what the product data sheet supports.

Can an imprinted concrete pool deck be restored without replacing it?

Yes, if the concrete around the pool is firm and level. The process is the same as on a driveway: pressure cleaning, repairs, brushwork along every edge and two coats of synthetic resin paint. What changes is the level of care at the coping, the drains and the steps.

Replacing a pool surround means breaking concrete right next to the pool, with debris, dust and risk to the coping and the water. Restoring it keeps all of that out of the picture. The deck keeps its pattern and falls, and only the visible finish is renewed.

The same method was used on the Marbella villa's driveway and carport, our main reference: the faded stamped concrete was washed, crack-filled, cut in by brush and finished in a dark, even colour. Around a pool the steps are identical; only the edges, the grip question and the drying window need more planning.

Why do pool surrounds fade faster than the rest of the garden?

They get the hardest combination of exposure on the property: full sun, repeated wetting and drying, splashing pool water, sun cream, and constant bare feet. Over time that mix leaves the surface pale, chalky or stained, often in patches around the steps and the shallow end.

White blooms and cloudy areas are especially common around pools. Our page on faded imprinted concrete explains the usual causes, and the guide on why stamped concrete goes white looks at them in more detail.

Is a recoloured pool deck slippery?

That depends on the specific coating and its finish, and the only reliable source is the product data sheet (to be verified for each product). We do not quote slip ratings we cannot document, and we will not promise a figure to win a job.

What we can do is discuss it openly before work starts. A glossy finish can feel different underfoot when wet compared with a weathered, rough surface. If children, older guests or holiday tenants use the pool, say so, and we will go through what the data sheet allows for that area.

Grip around a pool is a safety question, not a styling detail. Raise it at quote stage, not after the second coat.

Our guide on pool surrounds and slip resistance sets out the questions worth asking any contractor.

How do you protect the pool and the coping?

By planning the cleaning and the brushwork around them. During pressure washing we direct the water and debris away from the pool where possible, and the edges against the coping, drains and steps are cut in by hand rather than rolled.

  • Edges against the coping stones are masked or cut in with a brush.
  • Skimmer covers, drains and fittings are protected before coating.
  • Paint residues and wash water are kept out of the pool and the drains.
  • The pool area stays closed until the data sheet allows foot traffic.

Whether the water level, cover or pool equipment needs any adjustment is something we agree with you or your pool maintenance company beforehand.

When is the best time to restore a pool surround on a rental villa?

Before the season starts or in a clear gap between bookings. The pool area is out of use from cleaning until the coating can take foot traffic, and the exact time depends on the weather and the product, so it needs a real window, not a single afternoon.

For an owner abroad, the sequence usually looks like this: photos and dates by WhatsApp, a quote in English, access agreed with the key holder, and progress pictures sent as the work moves along. Our article on restoring a pool surround before the rental season weighs up whether it is worth doing.

Which colours work around a pool?

Colour affects how warm the surface feels in the sun and how the water looks against it. Darker shades look rich and hide marks but absorb more heat; lighter ones stay more comfortable under bare feet but show dirt sooner.

Many pool decks sit next to a terrace or patio, so it often makes sense to choose both colours together. See patios and terraces and our colour guide before deciding.

What does pool deck restoration cost?

The cost follows the same factors as any other area: square metres, condition and access, plus the extra edge work around the coping and steps. A small deck with many curves can take more brushwork than a larger rectangular one.

The guide figure per square metre is on our sister price and quote site. For your deck, send a wide photo, close-ups of the coping edge and of any stains, and an approximate area.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to empty the pool?

Normally no. The work is on the surrounding concrete, not on the pool shell. We protect the coping and keep debris and residues out of the water. If your pool maintenance company prefers a particular water level or cover arrangement during the job, we coordinate with them beforehand.

Can you recolour the coping stones too?

Our service covers the imprinted concrete surround. Coping stones are often natural stone or precast pieces with their own finish, and we normally cut in up to them rather than paint them. If your coping is part of the stamped concrete, mention it and we will look at it in the photos.

Does chlorinated or salt water damage the resin finish?

Resistance to pool water and pool chemicals is a property of the specific coating and is described in its product data sheet (to be verified per product). We check that information before recommending a finish for a pool surround, rather than making a general claim.

Will the deck be hot under bare feet?

Any surface in direct sun gets hot, and darker colours absorb more heat than lighter ones. If the deck is used a lot in the middle of the day, a mid or lighter tone may be more comfortable. We can talk through the trade-off between looks, heat and visible dirt when choosing the colour.

Can you remove the black stains around my pool?

Dark staining is often organic growth or dirt, and high-pressure cleaning removes much of it. Some deep stains do not disappear completely, but after cleaning they are covered by the two coats of colour. Send close-up photos so we can see what kind of staining it is.

How long is the pool area out of use?

From the start of cleaning until the coating can take foot traffic. The exact time depends on the weather and on the data sheet of the product, so we confirm it for your dates. On a rental property we suggest leaving a margin before guests arrive.

Can you restore a shared pool surround in a community?

Yes. Communal pool areas are common elements, so the community of owners decides on the work through its administrator. Necessary maintenance does not require a prior vote under the Horizontal Property Act, while improvements do. We supply the photo-based quote for the administrator to present.

Do you repair cracks next to the pool?

Yes, cracks and chips in the stamped concrete are filled before colouring. If a crack runs into the pool structure or the coping is loose or moving, that needs a pool specialist first. We will tell you if the photos suggest something beyond surface repair.

Can you add an anti-slip finish?

Whether an anti-slip option exists, and how it performs, depends on the product and must be documented in its data sheet (to be verified). We discuss the options available for your surface before starting, and we do not describe any finish as non-slip unless the data sheet supports that.

Is the pattern still visible around the pool after recolouring?

Yes. The coating follows the stamped relief, so the stone or tile pattern remains. Around a pool this matters, because the texture of the pattern is part of how the deck looks and feels. The difference is a uniform colour instead of faded patches.

Can you do the pool deck while I am not there?

Yes. A pool area can be restored between bookings without the owner present. We agree access with your key holder or manager, coordinate with the pool maintenance company if needed, and send photos during the job and once it is finished.
